Default Dubai - The great escape

Dubai - Two men who had been drinking heavily were lucky to escape with their lives after they crashed their car off the Floating Bridge and into Dubai Creek. Although the new bridge was due to be shut from 10pm, the men managed to drive at least 50 metres along the crossing at 1.30am before careering through barriers at high speed and into the murky waters.

The African driver and his Malaysian front-seat passenger were trapped inside their rented Daewoo car as it began to sink to the bottom of the Creek. Police said the men somehow managed to free themselves from the car and swim to safety as the car submerged beneath the waves.

First Lieutenant Ali-Al-Naqbi from the Difficult Missions Squad of Dubai Police confirmed that the car drove onto the bridge at high speeds before the driver lost control and smashed through the safety barriers before plunging into the Creek.

He told 7DAYS: “When we received the first emergency call I was very surprised as the bridge was meant to be shut at 10pm. We sent out officers and frogmen attached to the Sea Rescue Department to help with the situation. Both men were very lucky to escape with their lives and both appeared to have been uninjured during their ordeal,” Al-Naqbi added.

The vehicle has since been recovered from the Creek, police confirmed. Both men, who were said to be extremely drunk at the scene, were arrested for committing a variety of offences including drink driving, criminal damage, reckless driving and speeding. The pair could face long prison sentences for their actions, police said.

Last week Dubai Police issued an ultimatum to motorists who drive after they have been drinking warning them they will go to jail if they are caught. The warning followed police figures being revealed that showed a dramatic increase in the number of drivers being arrested in Dubai for drink driving this year.
